Livin' in a strain
03:34
|
|||
Now, the people's cryin, 'Mercy'
But the whole world is now in a strain
Now, the people's cryin, 'Mercy'
But the whole world is now in a strain
I am going to the court house
And have the judge to change my name
I was out this mo'nin'
I looked up at the risin' sun
I was out this mo'nin'
I looked up at the risin' sun
And the strain that I'm in
It will take me two years to overcome
Now, let me tell you boys
How your friends will treat you
When you run astray
Now, let me tell you boys
How your friends will treat you
When you run astray
They won't even come around you
And call you rather dirty names
I really believe
I'm going to have to leave this town
I really believe
I'm going to have to leave this town
Because the strain that I'm in
It is really carryin' me down
I was out this mo'nin'
I looked up at the risin' sun
Was out this mo'nin'
I looked up at the risin' sun
But now the strain that I'm in
It will take me two years to overcome.

Rip Van Winkle Blues
02:44
|
|||
If you haven't heard the story
then I think that you ought
It all happened up in the state of New York
in the Catskill Mountains
Van Winkle laid down
and slept 20 years on the cold, cold ground
No doubt of what Uncle Van Winkle had to drink
and he would take it anytime as quick as a wink
It must've been whiskey, home brew or lagger beer
slept off his troubles for 20 long years
When he opened up his eyes and he looked all around,
he seen his old dogs bones there on the ground,
his old gun rusty, and his ramrod gone, he got up shook his head and p ulled for home
Just think of what ol' Van Winkle say
sleepin 20 years with his face not shaved, his clothes not pressed, and his shoes not shine, when he got up he done lost his mind
He was thinkin all the time as a home he went
felt in his pocket and he didn't have a cent
He felt on his head and then he had a pain
but the sleepy headed rascal didnt know his name
When he got back to his little ol home, his wife was dead and his children all gone, he got himself together and when he heard the news, he said "For 20 long years I had the sleepin blues"

Drunkard's hiccups
02:53
|
|||
If the river was whiskey
and I was a duck
I'd dive to the bottom
and never come up
But the river ain't whiskey
and I ain't no duck
Let's play the drunkard's hiccups
and sip from my jug
I'll eat when I'm hungry
and drink when I'm dry
get to feelin much better
I might sprout wings and fly
I'll take down my fiddle
and rosin up my bow
I'll make myself welcome
where ever I go
corn whiskey, pretty women
have been my downfall
they kicked me and broke me
but i love them through all
My shoes are all worn
my toes stickin out
if I don't get some whiskey
I'm goin up the spout
I've played cards in England
I've gambled in Spain
goin down to Carolina
for to play my last game
Jack o Diamonds, Jack o Diamonds
I know you from old
You've robbed my poor pockets
of silver and gold

June Apple
03:36
|
|||
Wish I was a june apple
hangin on that tree
every time a little girl pass
she'd take a little bit outta me
Can't you hear that banjo say
"wish that gal was mine"?
Can't you hear that banjo say
"wish that gal was mine"?
Wish I had some sticks and poles
to build my chimney higher
every time it rains and snows
spits out all my fire
Going across the mountain
to hear that banjo ring
When I get on the other side,
Imma hear my woman sing
Build be a banjo out of a gourd
string it up with twine
the only tune it could play
"wish that gal was mine"
